'patriarchy [is] a system women and men support equally'
Taken from The Will to Change by bell hooks, this quotation argues for a more nuanced understanding of who enforces patriarchy.
I already mentioned this in the quote, but it makes me think of Christina Rossetti, personally. In many of her poems such as 'Goblin Market', 'Maude Clare' and Soeur Louise de la Misericorde', she suggests that misery and ruin for women is caused by them having sex outside of marriage. This is quite a patriarchal way of thinking, especially since the goblins in 'Goblin Market', Thomas in 'Maude Clare' and the king in 'Soeur Louise' don't get the same treatment or punishment.
On the one hand, Rossetti is like the single mothers worrying about 'ruining' their sons with too much femininity. She's trying to protect the women against the worst of patriarchy. On the other hand, her solutions for protecting women are, themselves, patriarchal.
