AO5 Reception

Heyyy - side note, I have been horribly sick the past 3 days and to my horror missed the AO2 webinar during one of my naps HAHHAHAHAHHAA
I was just thinking about AO5 reception and how to put it in/remember to include it in the OCR comparitive essays. I can definately understand how context changes how a piece is recieved, but putting that in an essay and making it sound natural I struggle with!

Do u have any advice for this!

Hi! That's no worries! I hope you're feeling better now!

There are some really useful ways to approach AO5! First of all, I'm just checking that you've read the blog post on it? I do rave about it quite a bit!: https://shanistutoring.com/how-to-do-ao5-for-a-level-english-literature/

The most important thing to be aware of when you do AO5 is to use it rather than just putting it in your essay! So you're trying to make it do one of these three things:

  1. Show that other people agree with your point of view so you must be smart!
  2. Presenting a counterargument that you can then dismantle.
  3. Show that the AO5 only applies in certain situations and explain why.

I would also combine it with AO3: if there's something you disagree with from a critic, from example, you might want to point to what in their context made them think that and why your context might make you disagree!

Shani C. I love the blog post! Can I ask about the third point about certain situations? (sorry!)

Shani C.

Zara Yes! When you're doing the define, categorise and ask thing, you might realise that an AO5 critic says something that's completely true of one particular category but doesn't so neatly apply to the other! For example, you might suggest that something Freud said is true of men but not women! Then you can argue that really interestingly!
