A text producer is a person (or people) who creates a text. They use the tools at their disposal to make something that other people can interpret and derive meaning from.

Depending on the type of text in question, there are many words that you might use for the text producer. For example:

  • Writer
  • Author
  • Playwright
  • Poet
  • Filmmaker
  • Screenwriter
  • Orator
  • Creator

You might also see them referred to as the “speaker”. However, be careful with this. It has a different meaning in poetry!

A text producer’s tools will depend on the type of text they are creating. For example, a writer will use words, text structure and graphology. A filmmaker will use words, too! However, they also have camera angles, camera movement, music, SFX and much more.

The important thing to know about the text producer is that they contribute to the process of making meaning. They do this with the text receiver: they create a piece of work using their tools, and then the text receiver interprets it. You need both a text producer and a text receiver to make meaning.

When creating a text, the text producer will have their own thoughts, biases, experiences and context (schema). These things will influence the way they portray things in their text, the text’s purpose, and the messages they try to convey to their audience. We call this top-down processing.

When studying English, it is important to understand the relationship between the people who make a text and those who interpret it. It will help you to include close language analysis and context in your essays and exams.
