Writing Great Stories for Online Audiences

Are you interested in writing a story on an online platform such as Wattpad, Dorian, Episode, Radish or Tales? Unsure where to start? Or maybe you would like to boost your story writing skills so that you can get more reads and positive reviews? Well, this course takes you from your first idea to when you press "publish" and beyond!

In many ways, internet is a great place to write and publish a story. There are loads of apps out there that can help you to tap into. You have loads of different types of stories that you can try: fully animated interactive stories, interactive visual novels, tap stories or plain prose. Plus, many apps offer a chance for monetisation from ads or premium choices! For the lucky few, their stories may even get selected to become a print book, game, TV show or film!

If you have a passion for writing, there’s no reason why you can’t use the great apps and resources out there. You just need to have the time, dedication and inspiration. If you combine that with an ability to learn, grow and take criticism on board, there’s no reason why you can’t make it big in the online writing world and earn a little bit of extra money while you’re at it.

Apps like Wattpad, Radish, Dorian, Episode, Chapters and Tales are great to help you to build your audience and share your talents. They do most of the work for you by bringing people onto their apps. Then, you just need to write well and promote even better so that you stand out.

About The Course

This course is designed to take you through your online writing process. I cover it all: from plot to promotion; choosing story type to costs and limitations. I go through all you need to know about the different writing platforms and apps, as well as how to pick the right one for your story. Plus, there are loads of extra modules to help your story shine. For example, this course has a module on how to write diversity well (in a more detailed way than my ShanniiWrites blog posts).

If interactive stories are your thing, this course goes hand-in-hand with my Acing Your Interactive Stories course. In that course, there are multiple modules on how to master the art of the interactive story. I talk in depth about character customisation, meaningful choices and how to choose your character’s looks. Plus, I show you how to combine the strengths of books, films, TV shows and games together to make a unique, fun storytelling experience.

The course will take you from start to finish. You’ll go from the birth of your idea to the process of releasing it to the world! Each topic will give you in-depth help and advice, as well as worksheets, quizzes and other great resources. By the end of the course, you should have all the tools that you need to write great stories again and again.

Writing a Unique Story

It’s not all about getting the basics down or the technical side of writing stories. In fact, it’s also important to develop your own sense of style and find your voice! Plus, readers are always hungry for something that is new and different to all the other stories out there. To write a good story, you’ll need to know how to strike the right balance between familiar and unique. You’ll need to work out what it is that readers like about the stories that they read so that they can recreate it. However, you don’t want to take all of the same-old-same-old along the way!

So, I dedicate a section to being new and fresh without being unrecognisable. It’s all about being able to create a story that, as Robert McKee says, embraces archetypes rather than stereotypes. This course will guide you through finding out the difference and how you can use that information to make you a better writer.

Bonus Units

There are lots of parts of writing a good online story that deserve their own course to cover in detail. These include:

  • Diversity and Inclusion in Writing
  • Worldbuilding
  • Understanding Copyright

However, you benefit from short sections on each of these things, too! When their in-depth courses come out, you are welcome to join those as well. But you don’t have to wait until then to understand a little bit about how these things impact your story.
